A Haunted Moment in Corpus Christi, Texas

After spending a weekend in San Antonio, Texas at a conference where my friend Jackson Young performed a spectacular concert and answered audience questions, I took a vacation.
My husband, Kick, came to San Antonio and we headed south to Corpus Christi, then further south to Padre Island. The beach and sun gave me a whole new perspective on life. Winter can be so draining, if you know what I mean, and it was great to soak up the salt air and sunshine.
We found an AMAZING restaurant on the island. La Palma made the best breakfasts we’ve ever had, and we went back twice for our morning meals. If you’re ever in the area, be sure to stop in and grab a bite.
One day of our vacation, we decided to explore the area, and found the WWII aircraft carrier USS Lexington parked in Corpus Christi Bay. This floating museum gave us a workout, climbing steep stairways and wandering five levels of the two-acre-long ship. We had a great time!
We stopped in Corpus Christi at the Old Bayview Cemetery which holds the remains of citizens and also honors fallen federal military service men and women.
Here’s where the haunted moments began. The cemetery is in a quiet industrial neighborhood with a school across the street, and we felt safe wandering around the older area of town. We walked through the gate into the cemetery and up the hill toward the tombstones.
In an instant, I felt like someone was behind me and turned back — at the exact same time Kick did. We just looked at each other for a few seconds.
“Did you…?”
“Yeah. You too?”
Chills ran through me. He just shook his head and started walking again.
In the still air, the scent of lilacs reached me.
Kick stopped walking, and started frowning.
I sniffed the air. “I smell flowers.”
“I know.” He looked around. I looked around. There were no blooming bushes, no flowers, no flowering trees anywhere in the vicinity.
We stood for a few moments, waiting to see what was going to happen next. I’ll admit it, I was poised to run back to the car and get the heck out of there. But nothing else happened, and we walked through the small area looking at the old headstones, conjecturing about the lives these people must have lived.
As we drove away, I asked Kick what he thought about the feeling we had when we first stepped into the cemetery. He admitted he felt it was just someone welcoming us, especially since they shared that floral scent with us. For two people who don’t believe in ghosts, we can honestly say, there was something from another dimension there at Old Bayview Cemetery.
Do you believe in ghosts? Or have you experienced something that couldn’t be explained?
Have a great week,
Randi

Fantastic experience. Loved that “they” shared the floral fragrance with you. I do believe in spirits (and truly believe I’ve “met” a few). You were welcomed, how nice, glad you got to share that with your husband.

It did feel welcoming, not menacing as the first few seconds seemed, but maybe “they” were checking to see if we were up to no good before scenting us their welcome.

I’d love to hear about them someday. I write a series that deals with ghosts, and I’m always looking for new twists on the hauntings.

My family believes in ghosts and I was terrified that my grandfather was going to come by and say goodbye when he passed on. I slept with the light on for quite a few nights!
